I had a cough, on my birthday!!!! sigh... no more ice creams, actually more of 7-11 coke slurpee.. I had it almost daily when I landed in Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit in short Bangkok, yes that the full name of Bangkok or Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon. In normal Thai conversations, Krung Thep is just used. What's with all the name one may ask. I will try (I hope so) to update my blog as frequent as possible and for this year will focus on Business start-ups, sales, marketing strategies.

There is a Chinese saying, 'when going to the temple respect the gods, when going to a house respect the owner' RESPECT is a rare word these days. Most children I see in a shopping mall talk or shouts back at their parents. Teenagers these days are mostly from the Gen Y or better known as the strawberry community. Why do I say this? Well it's personal observation.

RESPECT must be given and earned, without this principle, it is very hard to progress in life be it personal or work. It has to start from the heart, own personal's will to give and earn. How to we give and earn, as Confucius saying 'Respect yourself and others will respect you'

13,505 days of life (there abouts)

Wow time is really like the speed of internet connection, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. For me it's always been a mixed pace but for the last 12 months or so, like opening up a web page and you type in 'google.com' no matter at what speed you are connected it just come out - just like that.

Fast pace, slow pace, no pace..... Major developments, major career change , major life adaptations.
Firstly I resigned from Family business around 3rd quarter 2009, don't really know what I want to do. Sat down, hands together , thumbs turning.... actually I should have just munched on a bamboo which is much more suitable.. anyways... a light bulb moment appeared.

Acted on the light bulb before it burns out (light bulb ain't cheap these days) A short version - I got a new career. What as one might ask?? I'm a cosmetics distributor.... yes a guy dealing with cosmetics. A very big (ahems, Panda's are) stark contrast to what I normally venture into. To add more, my other partner is a guy too....

Two guys in cosmetics business, phew this is a first .... it not so much the gender, Two guys with absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about powders, cream, etc that goes on a face further more a female's face. A recipe for disaster but NO!! A determined Panda, means a determined Panda...
A series of discussions, phone call meetings to the USA and Panda ended up with a Master Distributor for a well known cosmetics brand, that not all.... it was for the Asean region covering Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and just added not too long ago Myanmar......

Adding to the excitement, Baby Calvin was due and my training to launch the brand is at the same time. Working my time management at it's best. Baby Calvin is going to be 8 months soon... gawd I have not updated his blog as well... http://Calvintigeryap.blogspot.com

Well it's the big 37 today... yes that many years ago I was alive , breathing , kicking and crying for milk.... only now I understand what my parents went through.

37 is my magical number, thus this year is my lucky year. Indeed it is... 14 years ago I set out a plan to move to Thailand, now I have the first step. An office, showroom and a house, without the help of my Thai partners / friends / Bro and Sis Alex & Hatsh this would not happen. It is a big Birthday present for me on my lucky number, lucky year. To add on, Diva Frances Yip is performing in Bangkok and we are glad to be part of the Official Sponsor for her make-up.

Well this is definitely a tough year to go by, not as in time. I regularly post on Facebook to buy time if anyone can offer to me. The tough part about me this year is I spend most of my time away from home. Setting up business is always tough in the beginning. I have not seen baby Calvin for the last 10 days, when I get back next week, I only get to see him 1 day and I'm off to Myanmar. 3 weeks in a month I'm not at home. I'm happy to have a understanding wife and I hope baby Calvin not forget me as he grows on.

As Malcom Gladwell's book Outliers, 10,000 hours to perfection, I think I can see where my 10,000 hours is, and now is the Tipping Point where the business takes off.

My body is getting tired but my brain still wants to continue, I guess I'll give in to my body for now... I shall continue in the morning........

Shoot at Songkhla Beach

Was shooting some adverts in Hatyai, Thailand. (I did nothing wrong!!!) So I thought of animal theraphy. With my Thai Brother Alex and Sister Hatsh off we went on a road trip from Bangkok. 210 minutes later we arrived at the destination. We bought our tickets and waited for the gates to be open. The gates will open about 12.30 hrs. While walking into the sanctuary, we were concern where the Tigers were, while walking in we saw some boars, deers around the compound. about 10 minutes walk later, we saw the keepers walking the Big Furry Cats out on a dog leash!!! errrr, is that safe ... anyways the lay the tigers under the trees , shaded areas and asked us to go near and they will take our picture with our cameras.

Here is one of the Big Furry Cat ... resting so peaceful... how I wish I can be like them.

Another Big Furry Cat on duty with the official cap.... very sleepy eyes, just after a heavy meal (very like me!)

Most of the Tigers are resting because they have just had their heavy lunches and mid-day sun is not helping either. I was quite wet by now showered with my own sweat. A good place to be for a workout and sweat. Sometimes I wonder why people pay money to get to a gym to sweat it out.

"That's the correct spot, scratch more....." One of the few cats lying around being photographed.

Now comes the mischievious little cat........

An Korr .. 3 months baby nosy-ing at what I was doing with all the clicking going on. We got around to play with airbrushing .. my favourite tool and of course spending a big dent in my wallet buying Bobbi Brown make ups. anyways that shopping experience will relate soon enough when I can rcover and breath.

My Coursemate Sophia did a natural make up on me, not so natural wha you first see the picture. That's because most of you will start to laugh or be speechless. My experince in this is priceless. To be a good make-up artist one must be able to let other artist make up on ownself. This will gain a lot of experience in terms of how it will be felt when we are doing the make-up on others.

I respect the samll percentage of male make-up artist as this industry is mainly dominated by female in the profession.

Well 1 more added to the male statistics of male make-up artist soon :)

well here goes :

I know , I know, jaws dropping, speechless, rolling on the floor laughing, rice spitted out, rice spraying on your LCD screen now.

I had my experience , anyone brave enough to try........

Make-Up Course...

As a hobby and personal development, I took up a make-up course with hairdo. My second class was last night. I had to be the model for my course mate Elvira and also me the make up artist on her as well.

Last night was beginning stages of colourful, fun and eyes make up. This was the result of Elvira on me..

I guess I had to be make-up upon to know the feeling of fingers blending foundation on my face, feeling of the hair on the tip of the brush, and sponges in a rotating motion to blend in the foundations.

It was a newer experience for me to be doing a full make-up on my course mate or putting a full make-up on anyone for the matter!!

Most of the time I just did some minor touch ups during my model shoots.

The topic : Smokey eyes... actually I wanted to do the Japanese Geisha but I spared her the agony of her walking back to office at 10 in the night with a white face and a small red lips.... next session I would have the chance.

One the contrary, when one side was done by my Instructor Lee Kuen, with the camera angle corrected, it looked like she was punched in the eye. So we did this for fun ....

' A report was made because I was punched in my right eye - domestic violence. '
What a story it would create. Hmmmm.. now I understand make-up and photography can do some wonders in story telling via pictures.

Voila my first make up on my course mate - smokey eyes with the help of my Instructor Lee Kuen....

Back to practicing on more faces.... lab coat on and seeking for more 'lab rats' ....
just kidding.... anyone willing to allow me to mess errr... errrr .. I mean allowing me to practice and make up on the face..... till then...next week for my 3rd and 4th class...

How to get this shot......

I was doing a few of shot where the model swings the dress to get a fabric dancing effect. I was looking at some magazines and pictures posted some of it are blurred shots and can't seem to freeze the motion. This is a very easy trick to the shot... here goes...

The Camera Settings : Shutter Speed of 1/250, between f/8-f/16 depending on your lighting set up.
The shots were done with 2 x Nikon SB-800 and 1 x SB-600 - Creative Lighting System. There are many more settings that you can experiment with. Be daring just test it out. A crew that put many hours into the presentation of a walkway.

Whenever I'm in Thailand, I always tune to FTV ala Fashion TV. I will watch it till I doze off and wake up to FTV.

Come this December , the word Impossible , I guess will be out of my dictionary. My company participated in the Kuala Lumpur International Batik exhibition & convention. While I was with the organiser I just casually ask if they have a time slot for me to use on the stage.

He came back yes! 45mins for a fashion show. I was happy for the few moment.... now comes the stress and headache.

Planning for the show and also preparing for the booth and all marketing materials. Well I would think after this event I will really sit down and write a book since I'm not a fashion designer, not an artist nor a fashion show organiser. All I have is ideas and the determination.

Finger crossed it all goes well in less than 40 days. That will be 960 hours... not a lot of time left...
I will need all the help I can get and afford. Working on a limited budget as well....

After all these I will need a rest to re-charge but knowing me I will be on my toes again for some other crazy business ideas.....

ImPossible = I'm Possible ...........

Dun you hate it !!!!

Aaarrrrrgh.... The Petronas Twin towers , The KL Tower, etc.....

My friend came from Thailand for his first time and obviously I became the local tour guide and ambassador of Kuala Lumpur to him.

1st stop - KL Tower, 400 + meter high - 4th tallest building in the world. One would open your jaw in awe standing dwarfed under the tower as you walk into the entrance. I look sooooo tiny......

Anyways bringing my friend up to the entrace and buying the tickets..... I think you would FAINT just to know how much it cost to take a lift to the observation deck and have a view of our hazy KL skyline.

A whopping RM38.00 , I asked the cashier if there is any Local prices ? She bluntly reply NO!....

Normal circumstances , if I was a family of 5 on a Sunday bringing the family to visit local tourist attraction I would made a very HUGE dent in my wallet.

RM38 x 5 pax = RM190.00

For the average household it could have been a week groceries. Hmmmmm opportunity cost which shall I choose... innie , minnie, miney , moe..... I choose (drum rolls) a bit hard to decide here... hmmmmmm

OBVIOUSLY I would choose not to go !!............

Tourism Malaysia encourages us to go local tours...... How are they going to achieve this when there is no Local Malaysia prices for local Malaysians!!!

Gee I wonder why Air Asia has been doing so well promoting to us Malaysians to travel Asean countries.

I sincerely hope all the Tourism Authority in Malaysia can get their act together and say what they mean..... and not come up with an excuse that it is affordable comparing to other countries.

Updates

It has been a while since I updated my blog....

A lot has happen since my last post. It's funny how we tell lies be it a white lie, blatantly a stupid lie, a lie to cover some other lies the list goes on and on.

A perfect example we use daily.... if we are late to an appointment the waiting party calls very confidently we say 'On the way'; 'very near'; 'traffic jam' and lots more :)

We use it enough times it just comes out of our mouth ever so smoothly like going to toilet on an easy day.

Well it was so funny when you know someone is telling you a lie, I'm sure most of you have been through the situation beofre.

Mine happened , oh oh I mean a friend of a friends story......

The news actually got to a friend of a friend's (fof) well before they tell them the news. so this fof of mine just listen in and listen to what they have to say. The story they tell you is funny.
Not going inot the specifiecs of the whole story but will reveal it in a much later time.

Well looking at the whole senario they would have to live with thier lies the whole of the life I guess most people can live with it. It a 'norm' thing I guess. The best part is they are not covering it lolz..... how brave can we get these days. I hope the new generation will not be like this.

Well what our teachers taught us in school 'honesty is the best policy' that went down the drain preety quick just like me downing my coke on a hot day......

haaaa.. the thought of coke now relates me to food and I'm hungry now. I guess I will stop here to top up my stomach.

Rescue Rescue !!!! I guess I have been in both the modes since the beginning of the year. Mentally and physically the body is not able to cope. What happens next?

The body will shut down even if you are still conscious. Anyways enough about my rantings.....

I'm to set a personal challange, a challange of 10,000 hours. It says 10,000 hours to perfection. Currently I have done over a period of 5 years in photography most likely minus off all the eat, sleep, sh*t.. that does not leave me much productive time.

I am hoping by the end of this year I can come out with a series of pictures that concepts I have thought of out of a box. Not the conventional pretty model pictures...........

My endavour now starts for me to crack my brains in location , theme, techniques, time, and most importantly cost $$$......

This was something thought of when I was doing some homework for a shoot. What will happen next ......

A lost to the Arts world - IB

February 20, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Renowned world icon artist Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, affectionately known as Ib, died of a heart attack at the Pantai Medical Centre here at 3.50am on Thursday.

He was 22 days short of his 73rd birthday on March 13. Well I chose to take the train, off to KL Sentral to purchase my tickets and bought myself a sleeping berth.

I have not been on the train for a good number of years, so it's exciting again to go on a journey like this.... the moment I stepped on board ... wow... the same setting I remembered when I was a kid. My parents use to take me to Singapore via train when I was a kid. 20 years later I see the same outlook except it has air-condition coach. KTM must have done a really good job in maintaining these coaches.

Never mind, I just put my bags on my upper sleeping berth and climbed on.... Guess what, either the bed had shrunk or I had grown in size.... as I remembered not too long ago when travelling with my parent I use to have so much space to sleep on the upper berth.... errr, , wait, wait... reality hit me.... hey it's 20 years later... duh!

Oh well, make do with the amount of space I have.... There were backpackers foreign tourist and local in the same coach. A foreign tourist asked me where does she store her backpack, err,,... good question.. well I just said up on our beds I guess.....

Next were senior citizens that occupy the bed below me and opposite me as well, as they got on the first thing they said to each other is take care of your belongings. The stories they've heard .. waking up and all your belongings are taken away..... wow.. I could not believe this statement. and guess what... big stickers everywhere saying be careful of your belongings... haiz.... we live in the year of 2007 now, Malaysia has pushed so much in ICT and a safe country for us to live in .. but KTM cannot invest in a CCTV camera to view coaches for security reasons.... oooo I forgot , they must preserve the whole outlook of the train....

Onward with my journey, 2045 hrs it says on the ticket, we pushed off at about 2050.... about 15mins later I saw a station coming up and I viewed thru the window.... aiks dejavu... I'm seeing Sentral Station.... errr... okok it's only 2145hrs, I'm not dreaming yet, can't be..... ohhh we traveled the opposite way and came back ... I wondered why????

I slept ok, waking up at almost every stop the train made. Morning came and it was sunrise, picked up my camera and took a few shots of the sunrise, waiting and waiting to arrive at my destination. I went to the bathroom... aiyeeeee..... I don't think you wanna go if it's really necessary..... but I had to go ....
After various announcement , yes there is announcement but you really have to pay attention because the announcer shouts into the mic , and it's kind of hard to make out what he says at times....

We have arrives in Padang Besar, the border between Thailand and Malaysia. this is interesting.... No proper announcement of what to do, just some mumbling over the speakers, the foreign tourist was talking amongst themselves of "are we taking our bags down, changing trains" most were just clueless including me.

Oh well I just took my camera bag and walked out the train. Oh it's the checkpoint here, we have to stamp our passports here in this station. So much for information and visit Malaysia Year... absolutely no proper information to tourist and locals alike..... When does the tourism ministry and KTM wake up to know that to attract more tourist some small details needs to be looked at....

Proceed to get my passport stamped, had everything cleared and about to board back to the train.... we have to wait 30mins before we can get back on board, reason: they need to refuel change coaches... but but but.. my backpack is still in there and so it the other passengers..... the train then chucks along in reverse... and I'm just hoping to see my backpack again.

The train arrives back at the station except now it looks a lot shorter, the engine, 2 coaches and a generator coach I think. Passengers go back into the coach, and everyone just see if their belongings are still there... phew it is....

Waiting anxiously as when again the train is going to move out again to get to my final destination. At last by the time it arrived into Hatyai station it was 15 1/2 hours from Kuala Lumpur to Hatyai..... phew

If I remember vaguely , I travel form Frankfurt to Amsterdam by rail took me about 6 hours.... wow I survived a 15 plus hours train ride.
Definitely a Malaysia boleh concept for rail travel for me that is... I'll definitely vote KTM an award for slow scenery travel ......

TAXI's in KL...

After my amusement in KLIA, I know it's bad for me to criticise the issues but frequent travellers will totally agree with me of the scenes that goes on..... sigh.

My reason for writing is to enlighten and not to create any uproar since we have Visit Malaysia 2007/08

Now comes my ride on the Express Rail Link (ERL) 28 minutes into the city. Well it's kind of near my house though but not walking distance, mind you if I had 1 suitcase with wheels, I could be home much faster than my bags are needed to tour around the airport.

As I get to the Sentral station, I would queue up to get a Taxi coupon as we are not encouraging touts but there are 2 lines available, a budget & a premium taxi's. Hmmm, obvious reasons for me 5 minutes ride less than 5km of journey to my home in Bangsar.

I nearly dropped to the ground, not my slip disc this time. The counter attendant had the cheek to charge me RM18.00 from KL Sentral to my house in Bangsar (near the McDonald's area).

I just ask what about the price listed on the back of the board that spells out the fares.
My reply "We have changed mangement, the fare does not apply". wow I thot ok recent changeover of mangement, but hey this incident happened 2 years ago and I keep amusing my self every time I walk past the taxi counters, the fare listing is still there.

What a joke! 'Malaysia Boleh' attitude I guess. And the best part is there is a complaint number listed, as with all numbers printed anywhere in Malaysia for complaints, 80% no one ever picks up the phone. Sigh..... oh well, I just had to call my home minister to pick me up at the Arrival area.

Another issue is KL Taxi's are famous even in our neighbouring country Singapore. Most time I get on a taxi in Singapore, usual chatter where from, etc etc. I always get told this by a few cabbies in Singapore, "KL Taxi's very famous for not using meters and overcharging" Well obvious reasons I would deny the statement and guess what it's not hear say from these cabbies. This statement is actually related to them by actual travellers who visits Malaysia and ongoing journey to Singapore.

They actually open the taxi door in Singapore and negotiate the price before going into the taxi. Well I won't blame them, I would do the same in any foreign country if I was short changed. I hope there are enough enforcement officers in KL to deter all this bad experiences to the tourist, I guess not. Hey we created a distinct product that tourist will remember our country by..... ( I wonder can this be patent or not?)

Ahhh well, hope for the best......... We have one of the best built airport in the region but the workings of it seemed to have a flaw. I travel at least once a month via KLIA to various destinations. It seems every trip that I'm back if ever I have a checked-in baggage, I would seemed to need to wait 40mins at the carousel, that is not included the time I took to shift my bum from my window seat of the aircraft, seeing other passengers rushing to get out of the aircraft like it's the end of the world or there is gold to be picked up when we get to the terminal building. ( I never found any!)

Generally it'll be in the satellite terminal, waiting for the aerotrain, getting to the main building, going down an escalator clearing customs. On a leisurely stroll it would have taken from 20mins to 30mins before reaching the carousel. Not to mention putting our little thub print on the passport scanner.

Hmmm, I often wonder if there was any slight chance the MAB (Malaysia Airports Berhad) did a annual competition of fitness run with an average baggage with wheels, from the satellite building to the main building, it would have been less than 60 minutes!!!

It's funny when you see the staff manning the baggage reclaim area excuses's they have no doubt most recycled throughout the 365 days, the conveyor belt broke down.

Hang on, no wonder it breaks, we have increased visitors from various parts of the world. That's what I lie to myself in order not to test my own patience. But wait again, in the newspaper some week back that another airline is pulling out this sector.
I'm confused now, never mind I'm still standing patiently waiting for my bag that's still touring the world class KLIA airport. Seeing so many passengers zooming pass me with 2 or 3 bags in their hand carried from the aircraft cabin.

The moment I walk out to the arrival hall, it always reminded me of my childhood days when my parents brought me to the food court. Owners or helpers from the stalls would swarm to the table like bees shouting to you what they have, 'wan ton mee', Rojaks, chow kuey teow.....

Sigh.... even with a high security area, they cannot get rid of the touts. During the exits it makes it look like a fish market in Japan where they are auctioning off the best fish for a price, here in KLIA thay are shouting for passengers who arrive which hotel to stay, car rentals and taxi services.............
Will we ever change from this scene......just wishful thinking.

Anything Can Happen...

This happened to me in september 2005.

Hi All,

For the last one week I had been confined to a hospital bed with limited movements due to a mishap of Slip Disc. It's funny how it happen, I was having a shower, lifted up my left leg to apply soap and I heard a rubber band snapping sound plus a jolt of electric shock on my back. Immediately my back gave way and I was on the floor crouching. I thought I had pulled a muscle, after 20 mins or rest I could not move my back, I suspected it was a slip disc.

Was was I to do, water still spraying onto my back, getting a bit cold. My wife was away in Australia. I had a lady house-mate staying with us at that time. How we communicated was another story. I took the towel and bit it, ran from the bathroom to my bed, upon getting to my bed I saw my handpone or the up-market word 'mobile phone'... I thought I can reach it from the bed. I got to the bed, slept on it, what a relief but #$%&* I could not reach to my mobile phone. I tried to move but I could not move by this time.

30mins later, I had to get my mobile phone, biting on the towel again but cursing this round took it. I called my house-mate downstairs informed her about my problem, asked her to come to my room to help me. Putting down the phone only to realize that I'm still naked.
Biting on my towel again, I can't believed I managed to wear my clothes while having a slip disc.

Ambulance arrived ..........
Anyways, transported to hospital by ambulance, Malaysian drivers culture not really giving way to ambulances. With the siren blaring, the ambulance driver still needs to use his horn.

Arriving at the hospital, the pain was getting worst. The doctor gave me a pain killer jab. That was really comfortable. I was whelled up to the ward.
My parents were there as well. I told mum I wanted to eat chicken porridge. She bought it, having to be staying in a private ward, it had this electronic bed, where you can adjust the tilt of the bed.

Guess what? Very macho I press on the button to tilt the bed so that I can enjoy my chicken porridge. Did I enjoy...... NOOOOOOOO... the tilt actually aggrevated the pain. I was hugging the bars on the side of the bed. Pressing on the panic button to call the nurse into the ward.
Nurses rushed in asking what's the problem... I just said pain killer, pain killer... dumb founded the nurse just stood ther looking at me asking me 'are you in pain?' I could have just answered 'No I just press the button to see if it is working' What was she thinking?

In the end I got my jab and managed to enjoy my chicken porridge with pain but still a week at the hospital.

This would serve as a warning to all who are over-eaters, big bellies, etc... take care of your back else it wont take care of you....

My first official Blog ...

Issit it funny that I have been using the computer since dunno when , and the web since I can barely remember, days whereby e-mails hoaxes were so real.....

Washed my toilets with coke, forward e-mails with each e-mail earning me money .... thinking of that I should have been a millionaire by now but still with no sign of my $$$$$.....
